Our Vision

A door that locks. A kitchen to cook in. The basic dignity of a private bathroom. A home is the foundation for every other important pursuit in life.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION STATEMENT

As an organization that works for social justice, diversity and equity are fundamental values at SideWalk. We cannot effectively carry out our mission without the voices, perspectives, and experiences of those who have survived these forms of injustice working at SideWalk as volunteers, employees, and board members. Survivors’ experiences must guide every decision we make.

Achieving this requires that we develop an organizational culture that is rare in our society. At SideWalk we strive to be a place where every participant, every volunteer, every employee, and every board member brings their whole self to the work. No one should ever have to code switch, change their identity, appearance, or communication style to be taken seriously, or to be honored and respected. We strive to be a place where people are treated fairly and where employees are paid, recognized, and promoted equitably.

Values

Courage: It takes courage to face into complexity. Every complex problem, like homelessness, is an interconnected set of dynamic, ever-changing issues.

Action: We don’t spend months or years studying a problem before designing a solution. We roll up our sleeves and dig into problems now.

Adaptability: We learn, we adjust, and we course-correct so that every failure is a step towards success.

Dignity: We strive to give dignity back to unhoused individuals through respect and compassion.

Our Mission

To end homelessness through community engagement and evidence driven practices.
